“There was a woman once and she had three daughters.”
There was a woman once and she had three daughters. The two older girls were very lazy. One day the oldest girl said that she would go out to earn her own living. All right said the mother. She made two cakes, a big one and a small one. The mother asked the girl which she would take the big cake with her curse or the small one and her blessing. The girl said "I will take the big one with our curse. She went away and she met a woman who was looking for a working girl and she went to work for her for a year. One day the woman went to the town and left the girl in charge of the house. When the girl got the woman gone she searched the house and she found a (log) bag of gold up the chimney. She took it and went away. The first thing she met on her way was a sheep. The sheep said "shear me" and the girl said she would not. The next thing she met was a cow. The cow asked her to milk her and she would not. The next thing she met was a horse and the horse asked her to scratch her and she wouldn't. She went on until she came to a mill. The mill asked to twist it and she wouldn't. She hid behind it. When the woman came home the girl was gone(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
