An Drochshaol (ar lean)
“The famine commenced in the year 1845 and was also severe in the year 1847 . . .”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)severe and the people used to eat raw turnips.
The people were found dead by the roadsides and by wells. Three men came to a house in Ballacurra called "Thomas Deely's" and asked for food. Thomas Deely gave them a piece of oaten bread and a mug of milk. When they had enough eaten they thanked him and went out across the mountain but they both died before they were half way.
About a week after that, two soldiers came into a house in Poulaphuca called "Michael Fords" and asked for food. He gave them a pot of porridge, but they both died before they left the house. There was a soup-school in Sonnach in the time of the famine and there is a man named "John Mitchel" living there now. There was another soup-school in Kilchrest between "Thomas Glynn's" house and "William Carty's" on the left hand-side of the road.
