- On Shrove Tuesday, people used to put salt on all the old ladies who would not be married. The reason for this is for fear that they would go bad before that time twelve months. This day is also called Salting Tuesday. On November Eve, it was a great custom to take gates from one place, and put them into another. The wheels used to be taken from under the carts, and put into a river, or taken off to some other place and hidden. The cabbage used also be plucked, and thrown around the yard. This custom is not considered a very nice one.The doors used to be tied with a rope, and when people would go to open it, they would not be able.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
