    The porridge used to be thin like soup and they used to drink it out of a sort of cup called a "noggin" which was made of wood. The
    oatenmeal used to cost about six schillings a stone and at the time of the famine it used to cost eight schillings.
    The people used to get up at about nine o clock with the sun's time and they used to work about an hour before breakfast. This is the class of work they used to do before their breakfast - from St. Brigid's Day to St. Patrick's Day they used to dig the land and break the lumps with a "mallet" which was a stick about five or six feet long and a thick piece of timber on top of it, at the time of the turf-cutting they used to spend an hour cutting turf. After St. John's Day nearly every man used to go to England until August.
    The most people had no table but they used to leave a pot in the middle of the house and a "sciob" of potatoes over it. Then they
    used to sit on sods of turf round about and eat away. They used to peel the potatoes with their nails or with the back of the spoon.
