- Woodbrook is a townland adjoining Newbridge or more correctly speaking Newgrove. It is on the west and about a mile from here - Killyan.
This Woodbrook was a farm in grass up to thirty years ago. Of course a few generations before that it was inhabited by a ruthless tyrant of a landlady - a Mrs. Jerrot (s0 pronounced) evicted it.
As was usual, in these cases a steward's house was erected on this farm. The present occupier of this house is Mannion who acted as a herd previous to the distribution by the Congested Districts Board. On this man's land and adjoining his premises was an old Castle.
It had all the appearances of a fortified place with turrets, battlements, enclosures & e.
It is said Granuaille lived in this castle, besides having another near Clifden in Connemara.
From this the queen went forth every day to inspect her herds, estates & co. Her mode of conveyance was not a motor car, but what my informant described as a "slide". That is a carriage on wheels of a semicircular shape, something of the make of our "swinging boats" used by travelling companions or enterprises. There wasn't an axle but it slid along the ground drawn(continues on next page)- Collector
