A Local Song
“This song was composed by a man named John Killen of”
This song was composed by a man named John Killen of Woodford. It describes an old dog which was killing hens and chickens to such an extent that he had to be shot. This is the song:-
In the cold month of march in ninteen thirty five,
There was a big ambush now to you I'll describe,
Of a hairy old mongrel his haunts were Rosmore,
To kill hens, ducks and chicks by the dozen and score. And the danger at night to man, women or child,
When he'd face human blood like a tiger so wild,
And a' prouling all night like a demon below,
In search for some blood o' where ever he'd go. He resembled a monkey, long hair on his chin
Four legs like a lion O' his tail was so thin,
And as swift as a stag o'er the valley would fly,
And spy a fat hen with the wink of an eye.Now some boys they decided to end his career,
They collected old muskets for shooting big deer,
They filled them with slugs of a very large size,
And swore out by the maker they'd blow out his eyes,T'was a cold frosty night when in ambush they lay,
They heard his sweet voice oe'r the hills far away,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
