to have been assigned to St Paul on account of the Sword; but how its female features were attributed though proper and entire, to the black bearded Apostle is not easy to see. Again, what has become of St. Peter? It is not at all unlikely that the third statue was really St. Peter's, with the Keys that belong to no other Saint. His figure would have been specially interesting for this reason.
In the other two the tops of the heads are imperfect, either because they have decayed through exposure (which would have been consistent with the tradition of their having been hidden in a tree) or (as it seems more likely) because each of them was originally provided with a metal crown, and consequently the artist left unfinished the part that would not be seen, just as he did not finish the backs.
Since Saint Peter would not ordinarily be given a crown of metal the condition of the head of this statue might have some significance. The Fiants of Elizabeth (nos 4691 of 3rd June 1585.)
