- Long ago people used not sweep out the dust of the floor on a may-day. They used put out the ashes in the fields on a may-morning, it was supposed to save the crops.
Some time ago the farmers were very particular about putting in their cows on a May-eve. If they were left out in the field some unfriendly neighbour would milk the cow early in the morning.
Then the butter would not come on the milk. If they wanted to get back the butter, they would have to go to the neighbour's house, and ask for a pinch of salt.
