- Paddy Sheils lived in Corthoon in a little house by the Owenmore river which separates Corthoon from Brackatybeg. He was a Hackler by trade and was often called on to weave flax.
One fair day during the Crimean War when Paddy was in Manorhamilton, he went into a public house for a glass or two of whiskey. While he was drinking the whiskey a man dressed in military uniform came in with two other men. The three men started to drink and after a while, Paddy asked the man in military uniform what he was going to do with the other two men. The man told him he was a listing sergeant from the British Army and that these two men had joined him.
