- The week before Lent is called Shrove week. There are different names for some of the days in Shrove week. Thursday is called clipping Thursday. This name was given to it because on that day the people get their hair and nails cut, because it is said that if they cut them in Lent they will have no luck for the season of Lent. Some people do this in honour of the suffering of Our Lord. Monday is called galloping Monday because so many people get married on that day, and long ago the people used to gallop home on horses from the Church.
