- In former times people never wore shoes until they were twenty years of age. It was usually clogs and home spun stockings they wore.
There was a woman named Mary Láidir (Mary Maguire) who never wore shoes, boots, or clogs. Every morning she went to mass a distance of three miles. That times the roads were rough with stones. She always travelled through snow, ice, frost. Her feet were always red and bleeding with cold. Most of the children go barefoot in Summer and in Winter they wear boots or clogs. There are six shoemakers in this district. They can both repair and make shoes. In olden times the people would make a point to wear their new shoes on a Sunday before they would wear them any other day.
