- There are a great many names for cows in this district. One of these names is a "polly". When a cow has no horns she is called that and long ago they used to be called a "meelin". When you want to call the cow you say "pruggy". The cow house is called a byre. The "ravaltree" is tied up at the roof and the stake is nailed to it. The "gad" used to be made with a sally rod and it is made with iron now. The spanchel is tied unto the "gad". The spanchel is made of hemp rope or a chain. The chain is tied around the cow's neck and if she is cross she is tied by the horns to the stake. The people used to leave a great many things in the byre so as to have luck. When the people cut a cow's horn they hung it up on the roof of the byre and they had good luck afterwards.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
