- In this locality in the townland of Tawnlion about a mile north of this school there was a hedge school. My Great Grandfather whose name was McTiernan taught there and my Grand Uncle also. They got no wages only what the scholars brought them. They lived about a mile from the school. There was another school at Moragh hill where the ruin of Morrisons house now stands and this teacher of this school was a man named James Dolan. Then the school was changed to Cornalaghta where the present Leckaun P.O. is situated and the teachers there were Michael Connolly, John Dolan, Michael McGowan and Nannie O'Donnell. McGowan was appointed under the National Board in 1861. The latter pair were removed to the present Newtownmanor school when it was built in 1872 and they taught here for some time. His daughter Ellen McGowan was appointed in 1883 and a new teacher named Clancy was appointed in 1896. He was dismissed in 1908 and J. Flynn was appointed. he resigned in 1912 and the present teacher was appointed.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
