    ridge twenty four inches wide and forty nine yards long will produce five cwts of potatoes. When the field is dry enough for planting the potato seed, which is already prepared and dry, is put into the ridges by means of a steveen or spade in rows about twelve inches apart. The seed which we call slits is prepared thus:- to prepare potatoes for planting, first of all the large ones are all picked out as the medium seized are best for seed. These are taken in and scattered on the barn floor and allowed to dry. When the potatoes are dry and clean the buds are all removed from them. Some people split the middle seized ones in two, while others again cut them in four parts, still others again cut them into pieces about an inch in diameter, each seed containing at least one eye
