- In olden times the people had no fairs but all the farmers gathered together on a hillside and exchanged animals with each other, but it is different now. Sometimes the buyers go to the houses of the farmers on the evening before the fair to purchase the animals. The fairs were held in a place called Purt Castle but now they are held in Abbeyfeale. Toll is paid to a man named Mr. Broderick. It is customary to give money which is called luck to the owner of the cattle. A shilling is the usual amount given. When selling cattle the two parties show their agreement by striking hands. The animals are marked either with a scissors, raddle, or a piece of puddle.
