- The night of the Big Wind
In the month of February in the year 1839 a night which will never be forgotten in history was witnessed by the Irish people. It was a very stormy and bright night and is ever since known as "the night of the big wind."
The day previous to this night was quite rough and wet. At dusk it ceased raining but some heavy drops which tasted as salty water were blown about.
This was the first token of the storm and it continued until a fierce wind had set in. It again ceased raining and the people then knew that a storm was nigh.
Late that night the Rosary was recited in every home and children were put to bed. The elders of the home remained up and their only place of safety was near(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
