He saw his grandmother making them when he was young.Candle-makingMany years ago candle-making was very common throughout Ireland. This is how candles were made.First they used to pull some rushes and take the skin off them except a small bit to keep the stalk strong. They used to dip this in oil and leave it in a cool place to get very hard. When it was very hard they (to) put it in a candle stick and then it was ready for lighting.
