- About eighty years ago when a pair were getting married they went to a friends house. When the guests came each of them brought a bottle of whiskey and a goose. For this their fortune sometimes the brides mother gave her a shirt and a red flannel petticoat a bag of potatoes and a bag of oatmeal. If they had no house the men would gather and make a sod house in a day. There were no "straw boys" out in those days, it is not long since this custom started. The unlucky month for getting married is May. The unbrisky days for getting married are Friday and Saturday.
