With twenty-fourtinkers in front of the play
To make them both Jolly, jovial & gay,]
Till they landed at Cloone, where they buried the dead
On this mournful subject there's no more to be said.
The fore-going verses relate to a tinker's funeral which occurred in the town-land of Aughnaglace some eighty years ago. It appears that news of the death of Dudley Gallagher was brought to the tinker confraternity throughout the midlands and West of Ireland. They flocked to the funeral in their hundreds and the unusual spectacle was presented of hundreds of tinkers marching in procession at a funeral and playing martial airs on all kinds of improvised instruments
