  1. Whooping Cough: This is locally called "chair-cough". The remains of bread eaten by man and wife who had the same name before marriage is supposed to be a cure for this. The writer (P McGuire) and his wife (formerly Rose A McGuire) have often been asked for the remains of a loaf, cake etc. for this purpose. Many have returned and expressed their thanks for "the cure". I am sorry to say we have a good laugh afterwards.
Another cure to be found is to place the child near an ass and to make it walk 3 times underneath the ass at right angles to the position occupied by the ass. This is done in the name of The Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Every posthumous child has a cure.
Jaundice: a cure consisting of herbs was believed to be Slanly, used to be made by Mr John O'Rorke, Breffni Vale, Clonconck Carrigallen. This man died in the Summer of 1938. He never revealed the name of the herbs used as far as is known. This cure was said to be effective in all cases.
Erysispalas - If this disease is suspected no person will mention the word "erysipelas" lest the complaint develop badly and be all the more difficult to cure. Those who make cures for it always jealously guard the secret. One of the ingredients is unsalted butter and this must be brought to the person who makes the cure. He never provides it himself.
