A visit during a wake is quite a different affair from a mere visit of sympathy in the day time. You are expected to stay a reasonable length of time. If you come late you may be faced with a vigil until dawn as it is considered highly improper to leave the relatives alone.
In some cases singing and story telling among the youth help to pass the long night. "Scogging" was a favourite pastime at wakes. Two youths singled each other out for personal abuse. Every thing harder than another is said. He who succeeds in angering the other wins the contest.
