- The houses that were there long ago were thatched. They used to thatch them with rushes or straw. Long ago the people used to have no windows except two small panes of glass because there was the tax on the panes of glass. There used to be a bed in the kitchen long ago. This was called a settle bed. The lights they used to have were bog-deal splinters, but the farmers who used to have a lot of cows or sheep used to keep the fat of the sheep and make candles out of it. These were called "dips".
