- Old CraftsPeople in olden times were very skilled compared with the people of the present day just because they had no machines to help them as we have. They did their own work and so were masters of all trades. All country people in days gone by made their own candles. First the bought grease which was placed on a candle pan and left on the fire to melt. This melted grease was poured into a mould. Then an old woman would come with a bunch of skined rushes to serve as wicks. Those wicks would be put into the mould and left to set with the grease.Basket-making was another trade. Baskets were made from rods twisted into shape. This trade is carried nowadays. In olden times all the spades and ploughs were made by the blacksmith.There were several flax-mills in this district in years gone by. The flax was grown, hulled, steeped in water, then left to dry. It was then threshed and the fibre was spun into yarn by a spinning wheel. Next it was sent to the flax-mills to be woven into clothes of various descriptions. Wool was dyed from stuff taken off the rocks and heather. Thatching is quite common at present. The thatcher thatches from straw and rods. Ropes were also made by pounding rushes and fur [?] together. Then there were people known as coapers(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
