    cavalry and, to save himself, he had to jump into the river and swim across. Some of the soldiers stayed on the bank firing at him and more of them galloped over Carrick bridge and were ready to meet him if he made his way across. When he saw the enemy on either side he got into some reeds in the river and lay on his back with only his face up over the water, while the bullets tore through the reeds on every side.
