- In olden times the people never wore shoes until they were twenty years of age or so. There was a family living in Ardagh that never wore shoes or boots. It was said that they could catch a hare in the run. At the present day children wear shoes before they are a year old. It is said the water that washes people's feet is thrown out the door. It was a belief by the people that if it was not thrown out the good people would be around the house on that night.
At one time there were six shoemakers in this parish now there are only two and they only repair boots and shoes. They became so cheap that it did not pay people to buy leather and give it to the shoemaker. Clogs were worn by many people during the time of the big war especially the poor.
