  1. Long ago the farmers had neither scythes nor mowing machines with which to cut the corn but they used sickles instead. They held the corn in the left hand and cut it with the sickle which was held in the right hand.
    When they had a sheaf cut they made a band and tied it. They continued this process until they had the corn cut.
    Then they put the sheaves standing up in stooks, each stook contained about sixteen sheaves
