  1. There are about five forges in this parish. The local forge is situated in Owenbeg and John Dowd is the smith. Connolly's forge is situated in Rathlee and George Gibson's in Easkey. A forge is always situated in the neighbourhood (of a stream). The blacksmith trade has been followed for generations by the same families.
The local forge is a simple structure. It has an ordinary door, one window, and a wooden roof. Inside there are two apartments. One is the bellows-room, and in the other all the forge work is done. The fire-place is in the dividing gable. The bellows was not made locally.
The following are a list of the implements the blacksmith uses: anvil, poker, paring knife, file, vice and pincers. He uses three kinds of hammers: a shoeing hammer, sledge-hammer, and hand-hammer. In former days ploughs, harrows and spades were made in the local forge, but nowadays such implements are only repaired.
