- Once upon a time a man named George Brett came home from the German wars on holidays. A certain night a banquet was held in honour of his coming, and many guests were invited. He began to tell how brave a soldier must be and all he has to do. One man asked him was he as brave as the rest, and he said he was that out from God he feared nothing. ''I'll make a wager of ten shillings'' said the man, ''if you enter a Kilmacshalgan Abbey at twelve o'clock to night, and bring forth a skull''He volunteered and arrived at the Abbey. As he entered the door he heard a great noise, and then he spoke, and said that if it was a living to come forth, and he wouldn't touch him. As he spoke the object rushed forward, and the soldier also used forward and drove the bayonet through his side.Immediately, the object rushed out, and the soldier stepped forward and took the skull. When he arrived home all were horrified when they saw all his clothes spotted with blood. The guests asked him what he had done, and he told the story as it had happened. They said they would wait on until morning and when morning came(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
