- The kinds of bread made locally about sixty years ago were always oaten bread, boxty and potato cakes. Flour was very scarce then and a few stones were bought on very rare occasions, as flour was considered a luxury. When the first bag of flour was bought in this district, it contained only four and a half stones of flour.Oat Cakes :—
When the oats was cut it was made into sheaves and then into “stooks”. After a few days seasoning, it was brought into the haggards and stacked. During Winter it was scutched by hitting the sheaves on a big stone, or by hitting the sheaves with a flail, in order to take off the oat seeds.
