- In olden times there were very little slated houses, they were usually all thatched with straw or rushes. They usedto have one small window in the kitchen and one in each room. The floors were made of daub. There used to be a little bed in the kitchen called a pooch bed. In the winter they used to have the cattle tied at the end of the kitchen. There was no oil and they made rush candles. Half doors were very common in olden times, and there is still a few in the district. They used to burn turf and sticks.
