- In olden times the ropes were made of sgadhach, and some make them up to the present day.
Sgadach is made as follows: Rushes are cut, beetled and left to dry in the sun, after which they are shaken like hay. One an spins it to another who twists it with a "traw-hook" or corhoogan.
This single rope is plaited. Sometimes two and sometimes three single ropes were plaited together.
They were used for all purposes on the farm in former years. Before jute or hemp ropes were bought. Cow spancels were made out of sgadhach and it was also used for carrying hay.
