  1. There were no regular shops in olden times. Goods were sold after Mass and a man still comes selling fruit at this time. It was was mostly groceries that were sold in this way. When they went to the town the people used to exchange crops for goods. Markets were held in olden times in every town and people used to buy fowl at crossroads and sometimes at farmer's houses.
    People used to bring feathers and rabbits and hares and fox-furs to the market and sell them. Men used to come to houses also and a man comes from Carrick buying them yet. People had home-made names on coins such as a tanner which is another name for a sixpence, a bob was what they used to call a shilling, a quid was the name for a pound and they used to call five hundred
