  1. In this district many old ruins are to be seen which include Ballymote Castle. The Franciscan Abbey and St Colmcille's Church which is situated in Emlaghfad.
It is uncertain as to when this abbey was built but it was occupied by the monks for many years. Micheál O Cléreigh spent some time here collecting material for the Book "Annals of Ireland" "(Annals Ríoghaora na hEireann." The monks had to flee during the penal times and then it fell into a state of disrepair. This is nothing left now but the four ivy-grown walls. Over the main entrance there is a carving of the then reigning Pope, of the most exquisite design.
St Columcille's church was situated in Emlaghfad the ruins of which are still to be seen. It was presided over by one of his disciples:- Enna. After the Reformation it fell into the hands of the Protestants and it is now used as their burial ground. The stone on which St Colomcille knelt on is to be seen
