- Some years ago before there were creameries the people had big dairies and they gathered and churned the milk. The churns they used were much the same as those used at the present day. They were made of timber and painted green or some other colors on the outside. They were wide at the bottom and narrow at the top.
In those days the people used to pack firkins of butter and bring them to Sligo or some other town and sell them.
The firkins were small vessels made of wood and scoured white to hold butter.
At that time there were many old customs and beliefs about churning.
