- In ancient times there were a great many strange animals in Ireland, but of late years they are not so plentiful. Among them was the water horse. This animal was much larger and fiercer than the horse of the present day. He lived along the banks of larger rivers and was much feared by the people for it is said that he would devour any person or any other thing that might come his way.
