- In olden days the people did'nt get their first pair of shoes until they were about seventeen years old, and when they got them they lasted two or three years for when doing a journey they walked, until nearing a town, in their bare feet in order to save the shoes. Even at the present day children go to school barefooted:
not for the sake of saving shoes by for pleasure and enjoyment for the persona d health for the feet. In summer weather they generally go barefooted.
The poem says :
"Blessings on thee, little man,
Barefoot boy, with cheek of tan"
These few lines show us, the happiness and blessings which are bestowed on the barefoot boy.
In former times it was a costum not to throw out the water in which the feet were washed after sunset.
In summer adults of old - if not barefoot - wore what were called "Creveini"
Theses were made from worn out stockings.
the sole (if not already gone) was cut of and a bit left to cover the toes.
These were worn in dry weather and in winter weather clogs, which were made locally, were worn. A man(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
