Around October, and November is the time for gathering scallops. The scallops are picked in bundles. There is a hundred in every bundle and each bundle costs a shillig if you were buying them.
In old days bog-deal splinters were the most common that were used when a person would be reading to give light. Somone else should hold it near them while they were reading.
Long ago candels were made locally. They would get the fat off the meat, and melt it in a pot on the fire. When it would be melted they would make it round like the candles nowadays, using an iron mould for the purpose. John Kerrins, Tonevane, has 2 of them yet.
