- We have no churn at home but my father tells me that we had one about forty or fifty years ago. It was about three or four feet high and about three and a half feed wide in the bottom and two feet wide in the top. The sides are round. The various parts are called "the churn, "the churn-staff, "the lid and "the cup.
There is a mark in the bottom to tell you how many pounds you could make at the time. The butter is made once a week in the Summer and once a fortnight in the Winter-time. Everybody in the house takes a turn at it and strangers who would happen to come in or be inside during the churning help at the work also.
It takes about half an hour to do it. The churning is always done by hand and the churn-staff is moved up and down. It is known when the butter is made by the soft noise. Sometimes people pour in water to keep down the cream.- Bailitheoir
