    a long day. The house was fortified with bushes, stones and mud. Inside were a dozen men with poles round which were wound barbed wire to defend the house. They also had hot line and tar which was poured freely on the assailants,
    General Ball from Dublin was in charge of the specials. He had an auxiliarys cap with a feather. (sticking out a mile) His was a most imposing personality. His men were also dressed differently from the ordinary policemen.
    Ball concentrated on the eastern gable, in which was a loft window. He ordered a ladder to be put up to the window. Audacious policemen found themselves profusely smeared with tar and hot lime, and many of them beat a rapid retreat. Sergeant [?] a really brave man held the ladder even though he did not proceed very far up. His eye got seriously injured.
    He was instrumental in effecting the eviction for he kept the men in the fortress engaged while other policemen were making a breach in the wall with crowbars.
    They eventually made a breach, arresting the 12 defenders, handcuffed every two together and marched them in to the barrack,
