    That night his daughter and himself were sitting before the fire enjoying the blaze when a huge rat walked out of the block: the old man took up a heavy iron tongs and struck the rat, and the tongs bent in his hand. The daughter fell in a weakness and he had to go to her assistance. When she recovered he searched all over the house for the rat, and though all doors had been shut no rat could be found.
