  1. A chieftan of the McCarthy Mór, lived in constant terror of his money being stolen. He was very rich and people suspected him of keeping all his gold in his castle. So he determined that he would build a secret hiding place for it. Just as he had finished the work, war broke out among some of the tribes, so he placed the gold it its secret hiding place. It was about one mile from his castle and as he was returning home, he was shot by some of the soldiers of his enemy. His friends found him dying and walk his last breath he gasped - "money is in fence seven miles long hidden between bog and earth".
Part of the fence exists to the present day, from the two paps to Maughantourg. It is broken up by Meentogues school and adjoining houses. Nobody ever succeeded in getting the gold.
