    have first preference. The priest then took the book and read two or three pages out of it. It was then handed to Eogan and he read the same pages. He then closed the book handed it to the parish priest and read the pages backwards. He then told the priest to repeat it backwards as he did. The priest was unable to do so and the bet was decided in favour of Eogan.
    Often it was a custom with Eogan Ruad when hard pressed for money to enlist in the army and then desert after a time. On one occasion he was arrested for desertion and was being marched under escort from Millstreet to Mallow. Mallow being a garrison town they put up for the night Eogan and some of his comerades were drinking in a public house where some farmers of the neighbourhood of the town were drinking. One of them was singing a fine song that was a composition of Eogans. The farmers not knowing Eogan asked the soldiers if they had ever heard a finer song and Eogan replied saying he heard a man who was able to sing a finer song himself They challenged him to a bet. Eogan said he had not much money only two pounds and that his officer might back him two more.
