- The animals to be found on almost every farm are cows, horses, sheep, goats, and pigs. Cows are usually given names, such as Bawny, Dearg, Blacky, Beauty, Strawberry, and Daisy. The house where the cows are kept is called the cowshed or the byre. Cows are tied with chains or bails. The chains are passed around the cows necks and fastened with a swivel. The bails are wooden frames into which the cows put their heads. The frames were then closed in such a way that the cows could not withdraw their heads. When a person is milking a cow he sits on a small stool. When a cow has a habit of kicking those who milk her, her hind legs are tied with a rope called a spansel. The rope is made from the hair from the cows tail. Straw, rushes or furze are used for bedding for cows. Horses are kept in stables and are not always tied. They eat hay, oats, mangolds, and potatoes. When a person is driving cows he says "how, how". When a person is calling cows he says "sup, sup".(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
