    and the bottle was then broken on a stone. When the bride goes into the house, her parents would give her the tongs to throw a coal back on the fire, to show she was mistress of the house. The neighbours would meet her with the churn dash.
    If the couple did not have a dance, the young boys would “kettle” them. They would break the bottom of a bottle and blow it. An old custom is to break a piece of oaten bread on the brides head so that she may have plenty.
