- In the olden days in this district as well as everywhere else in Ireland the people lived on whatever they grew on the land. The main crops of course were wheat, and potatoes and they grew just sufficient of the former for their own needs. With these they made different varieties of bread such as boxty, stampy, potato cake, and oat meal cake. Oats of course was then as it is yet one of the most important after potatoes of the crops grown in the districts, and was used very often in the making of these types of bread.Boxty
