  2. Long ago there was no corn or wheat mills in Ireland. They had querns for grinding stones stones for grinding the corn. The querns were oval shaped stones. The bottom stone was flat and had a hole in the centre. The other stone was much larger and had a thick spike in the centre. The women ground the corn while the men were hunting the wild animals. They put the corn into the large hole in the bottom stone and the sharp thick spike went down on the top of the corn. Then they caught hold of the handle on the top stone and pulled it round and in a few hours it was ground. Then they took it out on a sheet and spread another sheet on the ground. The put it from one sheet to another until all the covers were blown away. Then it was used in making stampy and oatmeal bread.
