- Fine strong rushes were cut in the meadow and brought home. They were peeled and tied in bundles to dry. When they were quite dry they were dipped in the melted fat of animals and left to harden. A sort of candle was made by dipping a cord in the melted fat. These candles burned very quickly and always bended if placed near the heat so they were not very good.
- Soap was made in this district until very lately. Large quantities of fat was poured from the butcher shop. This was melted over the fire in a large pan. Caustic parafin oil and other chemicals were added to it and it was put out in shapes to set. This soap was soft was wasted quickly.
