  1. Lace - making was a very famous industry round here about forty years ago. All the women & girls were kept very busy. They first cut a piece of wood from a tree, bought a linen spool at 5s & needles at 3s. Then starting with 9s a family named Smith were known to make £20. Quilting was also done in olden times on a frame like an easel. A story is told of how a shirt was dyed in this district. A man washed his shirt & put it on a ditch, overgrown with ferns, to dry. On the next day he went to see was his shirt dry but to his great surprise the back was printed over with tiny fir - trees. The ferns had stained it & although he washed it again he never could get the stain out.
Candles were made from the inside of rushes & resin or lard.
Baskets & creels were made from rods.
    Ropes were made from tow.
Churns were made also & the man who made them was called a cooper.
There was a nail - maker in Drumbrain who was called "Peter the Nailer." He made nails of iron. There were many lime - kilns in this district. They are not in use now. There was a limekiln in Mickey Mulligans' field in Carn. There was another in Garron & another in Raffoney.
