  1. There was a hedge-school at Strabawn cross about a century ago. There was one teacher teaching there. The teacher lodged in the houses of the people about the district. They got no pay only their meals as the people could not afford to pay them. They taught English, Arithmetic, Geography, Catechism and no Irish in the schools. They used to write with a slate and a pencil. They used to sit on stone seats. The children were very poor and they did not go to school until they were seven years of age. They left school at twelve because there was no law. The teacher used no blackboard and he stayed a long time in each district.
