itself felt. When these seed-potatoes were planted they were put in drills in the usual way, or set in ridges in a steep field or in any available scrap of ground. The new crop was a sight to behold. The like of it had never been seen in the country and early in July the potato fields were a mass of white blossoms. The Champions were the best potato ever brought into our country. They were described by the country people as "balls of flour" and were excellent for table use.
Unfortunately these fine potatoes are now "run out" and are not grown by any of the farmers in this district. They got small, were black and ugly in shape and did not keep well in the pit and so they ceased to be planted. There was an old saying at this time. "If the potato misses Ireland's beaten."
